PROTECTING THE FUTURE OF SPORT WITH NIKE’S MOVE TO ZERO

At the beginning of 2020, Nike announced a comprehensive new sustainability action plan with some ambitious targets. And like their famous motto—“Just Do It”—they’re taking a proactive approach. The “Move to Zero” initiative is essentially a journey towards their primary goal of zero carbon and zero waste across the whole supply chain, and they aim to meet several of their targets by 2025, including 100% renewable energy, 100% sustainable cotton, and zero waste to landfill. But that’s not all they have up their sleeves. Have you heard of “Nike Grind”? That’s the name of the brand’s closed-loop manufacturing system, which recycles consumer waste like material from recyclable Nike trainers and clothing scraps. There’s also “Making,” an initiative that aims to level the playing field of global inequality by promoting transparency and accountability across the supply chain. They’ve thought of just about everything.

MEET NIKE’S SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

Materials account for more than 70% of a product’s footprint, so Nike is rightly focusing on using more eco-friendly materials and re-using existing plastics and textiles to significantly reduce emissions. As well as an increased use of recycled polyester and nylon, some sustainable Nike innovations it has in its arsenal include Flyknit, a fabric precision-engineered for Nike recycled trainers to create 60% less waste, with each Flyknit upper containing six to seven plastic bottles. It’s super lightweight too, so works great to boost speed in running shoes. But the greatest success story so far probably comes from Nike Air Manufacturing Innovation. Since 2008, all Air soles made at Air MI facilities (run on 100% renewable wind energy) contain at least 25% recycled manufacturing waste, with 90% of waste produced during production being reused and recycled into Nike products. Nike Air technology can of course be found in iconic lifestyle and basketball shoes like the Air Max, Air Force 1, and the Air Jordan, to name but a few.

So there you have it. Here’s a line of great-quality, partially recycled trainers and sustainable clothing that you can shop till you drop guilt-free. Jump on board the sustainable Nike train today!
